My Message

To my wonderful friends, family and Connected North supporters!

I have had the great privilege of visiting many communities in Canada's far north. And I am awed by the resilience of all the students, teachers and community leaders I have met. We have much to learn from their experience. But the hard reality is that they face challenges every day that we can't see, or know about, or appreciate - because they are so far away.

In a research survey recently released by Canada Helps and Imagine Canada, it was reported that of ALL The money donated to charities in Canada last year - ONLY ONE PERCENT went to Indigenous issues. It's hard for me to grasp that - knowing the suffering and trauma, knowing the gap in educational support and funding with southern counterparts, knowing the terrible legacy of the Residential schools, and the often unacceptable living conditions.  With high drop out rates of around 70 percent by grade nine and the highest incidences of youth suicide rates globally we need to do better to ensure that these students get access to the resources and opportunities they need and deserve. Canada can do better. And we can all be a part of that.

We all support so many wonderful charities - we are touched by personal experiences, we know family members or friends sadly and often tragically impacted by cancer, or mental health issues. We see it, and we want to help. And we do. But we can't see these children. And yet they are there. And they deserve our respect and support. I have seen the transformative power of what change can bring. The hope it can bring. The potential it unlocks.

And so I am asking you to please help me support the Connected North program. Every day this wonderful program brings resources and experiences to 10,000 students in classrooms from Nunavut to the Yukon. From mentors, to visits to museums, sessions on well being, cultural exchange, music and dance,  native language instruction and so much more - we bring hope, opportunity and most importantly the commitment that the children and teachers are heard and valued. After six months of Connected North sessions, 64 per cent of children in several of the northern Ontario schools reported being "excited" about their futures. This is an incredible result - and the goal of the program is to make this possible for thousands more children.

So ask yourself what kind of Canada you want to see - think of the Canada that can be - an inclusive country that supports and respects the needs of Indigenous people. You may not be able to see them, or know their stories - but with Connected North, we can.

Thanks so much and best to you all as always,
